IGSI: 40 Years of Evolution
||The Irish Interest Group of the Minnesota Genealogy Society formed within the larger group. According to IGSI history, MGS “decided that the size of the organization did not allow enough time and attention to be given to each nationality and their particular research needs. So each nationality was encouraged to start their own Interest Group.”
||Irish Genealogical Society was formed and approved as a branch of the Minnesota Genealogical Society – though the group’s publication continued to be called “Irish Interest Group Newsletter”.
||The name of the publication and the society changed. The society was now called “Irish Genealogical Society” and the publication began using its new name “The Septs”, in 1990.
||The society’s named changed again, to what we know today – Irish Genealogical Society International (IGSI). When applying for copyright on the former name, it became aware of other groups with the same name. It seemed simplest to distinguish our group.
||IGSI separated from MGS – incorporating as an independent organization – yet retained its library collection and office cooperatively with MGS. We continue as affiliate of MGS and partner organization in consortium at the Minnesota Genealogy Center.
For an excellent summary of the first 25 years of IGSI, see Val Morrison’s article in the July 2006 issue of The Septs.
